First Things First

Say “Cheese!”

By James M. How

Although they only last a moment, the memory stays with you all your life. It has immense value, and yet no one is so poor that they can’t afford it or so rich that they don’t need it. What am I talking about? A smile.

Many studies have shown the surprising health benefits of smiling. Whether it is just a grin, smirk or full blown cheek-to-cheek cheesin’, there is no denying the feel-good power of a genuine smile.

Did you know that we are born with the ability to smile? During the first few weeks after birth, a baby smiles. These early smiles are known as reflex or involuntary smiles. Experts explain that these kinds of smiles happen during dreams and seem to be related to internal feelings and activity of the nervous system. Even as adults, we can experience these types of smiles after a tasty meal or while we are listening to music.

As we grow older, we learn another kind of smile, a “social smile.” These voluntary, conscious smiles happen in response to a face or voice. They cheer us up, and according to speech therapists, the mere gesture of smiling produces an electrical stimulus that releases endorphins, the chemical in our brains that makes us feel good.

Other health benefits of this chemical reaction can be reduced blood pressure, reduced pain and stress, even a stronger immune system. Studies have also shown that people who smile more appear more courteous and competent, more productive at work and make more money. Is there anything a smile can’t do?

Another important reason for smiling is the positive effect it has on others. A genuine smile communicates our feelings without the need for words. With this simple gesture, we can benefit ourselves and others.

Try a smile challenge like the Waiting Challenge. If you find yourself in a moment where you are waiting for something, whether in traffic or at the grocery store, stop and smile. See if others return your smile. They are contagious after all.
