Pushing Life’s Little Buttons

By Ashley Wicker

Are you technologically inclined? I don’t mean working on the computer – I’m talking about all those little automatic buttons and gadgets we have in our lives to make things “easier.” Opening our garage door with our phones. Watching the squirrels dig out our flower pots via camera doorbell. Vacuum cleaner robots that work silently while you sleep. Those little things with NASA-grade tiny technology inside of them.

My dog Tazz has many talents – but his affection for the small tech items in our lives is very challenging. He loves the fun of chewing up TV remotes and forcing me to buy “universal” remotes that confound me every time I try to set one up. He’s also fascinated by the hazard lights button on the dashboard of my car. He pushes it all the time with his nose. In fact, I bet I myself would spend 20 minutes trying to find that little button in an emergency, but he finds it and turns it on with ease while we drive down the road! He even managed to summon 911 from my car once. I’m still not completely sure how that happened – but what an embarrassing telephone conversation that was. “No sir, I don’t need any emergency assistance, my dog accidentally called you.” “No I’m not having a stroke.” “Yes, I will pull over and give you my full name, address and phone number.” Mercy!

Sometimes I just want to talk to a human, not push a little button. Another person on the end of the phone who’ll tell me, “I can take care of that for you.” Maybe even share a little joke, chat about local events or comment on the weather.

I’m proud to work for a company that values that very same need in us all. Reid Health Alliance Medicare is local people doing local business. We understand the unique lives of Hoosiers. Isn’t that nice? Push the little button on your phone and give us a call, or – better yet – let your dog do it for you!
