12 Tips Just for Kids – Help for Holiday Stress

Parents and guardians: The holidays are a stressful time – and not just for adults. It’s a time of busy activities, changes to the routine and more. To help your kids cope with any stress or anxiety they may be feeling, share this article with them. And of course, talk to your child’s doctor if you’re concerned or need extra advice.

It’s the holiday season, and you, your family and your friends might be celebrating in many ways. The holidays can be really fun and full of happiness – but they can also be stressful. It’s normal to have a lot of different feelings this time of year. You might feel like you’re always busy and don’t have time to relax. You might find yourself worrying a lot. Maybe you get sad. Or you might just feel “different” than you usually feel. Lots of kids go through things like this. Talk to your parents or guardians and let them know how you feel. And – just for you – we’re created a list of things you can try to help yourself feel better!

  1. Find a favorite cozy, quiet spot. Get a few minutes of quiet “alone time” during busy days.
  2. Take deep breaths! If you ever feel like you’re moving 100 miles an hour, take a minute and just breathe deeply – close your eyes if it helps you relax!
  3. Get up and get moving! Play a sport, run around, hike with friends and family.
  4. Work out your brain too! Do a word search, or crossword or jigsaw puzzle.
  5. Grab your favorite toy! If you go a lot of places during the holidays, bring your favorite toy along. You’ll have fun playing with it, and it’ll remind you of home!
  6. Keep healthy snacks with you. Being hungry can make some feelings worse.
  7. Rest up! Get plenty of sleep at night, especially before busy days. And take naps when needed.
  8. Giggle, laugh and chuckle! Tell a funny joke. Laugh out loud. It can help you feel better.
  9. Plan to do one thing every single day. During the holidays, it seems like every day is new and different. This can be scary! So pick one thing – like reading, drawing or listening to a favorite song – and try to do it every single day.
  10. Take breaks! Holidays often include hours and hours of doing the same thing. Sometimes you need a break! Sitting for hours? Get up and move! Walking around all day? Find a place to sit down and relax. Talking all day with friends and family? Take just a couple minutes to be alone.
  11. Talk! Chat with your parents or guardians about how you’re feeling. Grown-ups know how to help you feel better, because they go through the same things you do!
  12. Say thanks! When you feel bad, it can help if you think of what you’re thankful for. Tell your family why you love them. Write a list of your favorite holiday things. Smile and think of the good parts of every day.

You’re a one-of-a-kind, special person! We wish you a happy holidays!
