Parent’s Day

By: Kim Smith

Whoop, whoop! Summer is officially here, we are about one month in and I’m loving it – considering winter definitely overstayed its welcome this year.

Now that summer is in full swing, we all have lots to celebrate. We get to plan vacations with our loved ones, enjoy a nice backyard BBQ and take in the beautiful summer sunset with a bonfire going. I’m especially busy during the summertime celebrating birthdays; I’m so lucky I get to celebrate six birthdays alone in the month of July, and that is just immediate family.

Since we are on the topic of special days, I’ve noticed we have a national day for just about anything. National Cheese Pizza Day is September 5, National Relaxation Day is August 15 and National Chocolate Cake Day is January 27. Another national day I came across was National Parents Day, which is the fourth Sunday in July; this year, it will land on July 23.

Aside from National Chocolate Cake Day, this is my favorite day. In my case, I get to celebrate the two people that have been through it all with me. My mom and dad have been and still are my role models. As a parent, I know I can pass down the values and love they have instilled in me to my kids.

We have all heard the saying: It takes a village to raise a child. Parents don’t need to be blood-related to take on this role. This can be a mentor in your professional life, a teacher, a foster/adoptive parent. We all have people in our lives that we look up to and thank them for guiding us and taking us under their wing.

As you can tell, I love the summer season, but this is the perfect time to let your parents know how special they are. The partnership they’ve had has been noticed by their loved ones, and it’s very much appreciated. So take this opportunity to set some time aside and enjoy a nice home-cooked meal or a nice walk around the neighborhood to show your appreciation.

At Reid Health Alliance our team is here to partner with you and help the members of the communities we serve together. For us, it’s all about helping community members make sure they have the information they need every step of the way as they navigate through the healthcare coverage system and life in general.
