If you’re like me, you may have relocated to the beautiful west North Carolina area to experience the wonderful seasons. Coming from Florida, we only had two seasons, Hot and Hotter. Here in west North Carolina we enjoy all four wonderful seasons, each bringing its own beauty to the area. Spring is particularly welcome.
Ah, spring! The season of new beginnings, where the earth seems to come to life again. Those who deal with seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, especially welcome the warmer weather and increased sunlight. If you’re unfamiliar, SAD is a type of depression that’s triggered by a change in seasons – usually starting in the fall and getting worse in the winter, before ending in spring. Only about 5% of adults experience SAD, but living here in the mountains – where fall and winter months are usually cold and dark – we have a higher concentration of those affected.
So, what can help during these fall and winter months? Some increase their intake of vitamin D. Others use special lamps with white fluorescent light tubes for phototherapy. Some try to spend more time outdoors to get more sunlight, or try to increase the amount of light that enters their home or office. And some use a type of talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, which helps you understand how thoughts affect emotions and behaviors. All can help. Whichever method – or methods – you like to use, planning ahead is important in combating the effects of SAD. And you can always reach out to your doctor for advice.
After many years of working in the health insurance world, I took an opportunity to work for a homegrown company here in North Carolina, FirstCarolinaCare. They understand community – not just during the once-a-year enrollment period, like most big-name companies – but throughout the year, during the ups and downs. So be on the lookout for educational and fun events we’ll be having in your area. Get out and get some sun – and remember to cheer, because spring is near!
