Why We’re Asking About Race and Ethnicity

As your trusted health plan, we’re your partner. It’s part of our job to always keep you informed on what we’re doing to better serve your needs. You may be wondering why we recently started asking for information on your race and ethnicity. Like everything we do, it’s to help you stay healthy and get the best care available.

The Basics

Everyone’s healthcare needs are different. You’re unique – your age, background, culture, medical history, family medical history, lived experiences and much more. And no one’s needs are the exact same as those of others on our health plans. By knowing more about all our members, we can better get everyone the personalized care, services and resources they uniquely need.

A Nationwide Effort

We’ve also been given a push by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), who’s leading a nationwide effort to gather data to improve America’s health. The NCQA is an independent nonprofit that measures and accredits health plans like ours, to make sure we’re providing you (and everyone on our plans) access to top-quality healthcare.

The NCQA has asked us to start getting race and ethnicity information from those on our plans. They’ll use the information to help improve the quality of healthcare everyone receives. Their measurements will help us make sure everyone gets the care they deserve – and the care, resources, tools and more that better meet their specific needs. It goes back to that same truth that everyone’s needs are different, and the more we know, the better we can serve you and help you stay healthy.

An Important Note

We value you, your health and your privacy. We want you to know that we will not use your race and ethnicity information to discriminate against you, change your benefits or cause any bias. And if you want more information, you can call us at the number on the back of your member ID card. We’re always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Help us partner in your care and well-being.

It’s our goal to always connect you to the care you deserve – as personalized to your unique needs as possible. Help us in this effort to gather the information we need to best serve you. We’re so grateful to be your partner in helping you live your healthiest life.
